What do you think is the one household chore people try to avoid having to do outside their home/in a shared space the most?

It’s laundry!

Have you got it right? Yeah. We thought you might.

Nearly everyone who has ever lived in (or is still living in) an RV/trailer, apartment building, or dorm knows the horrors of washing their clothes. It isn’t even so much the fact that you have to carry your dirty laundry someplace else just to wash it. No. It’s the common laundry room in general. And the hassle of other people having left their stuff in the machine, clogged up or broken down washers, and the really off-putting discovery of which type of underwear that [insert description of choice here] neighbour wears. Or doesn’t wear, for that matter.

And it’s similar with laundromats, really. There’s always that slightly uncomfortable feeling of having to literally air your dirty laundry in a public space. And it’s not really cheap in the long run either.

Sadly, though, moving does not always save the problem. Many small houses and apartments simply do not have enough room to install a full-sized washing machine.

And for others it’s the moving itself that proves to be the problem. If you need to relocate frequently, then shelling out for a washing machine (and a drier!) usually isn’t very viable.

But! If you find yourself in one of those situations, don’t you worry! We have got your back!

There is a solution to the dilemma, and it is a portable washer. These devices are (as the name suggests) easy to transport, which basically translates to smaller and lighter than their full-sized relatives. And what’s even better, they typically do not need the same specialised water attachments a full sized one would need. Oh. And they are way less pricey than their big siblings.

So, in oder to make your life a bit easier (and save you from that nightmarish need to use public laundry rooms!) we have collected the best portable washing machines available here:

Q: What does “portable” really mean when used in conjunction with a washing machine?

Portable, in this case, means “easier to move around”. It really doesn’t mean “fits into your suitcase”. But it might just fit into a (bigger) cupboard or closet. Or the trunk of your car.

Sizes obviously differ from machine to machine, but to give you a general idea, 25” X 15” X 25” seems to be a good average. And in terms of weight think about 25 to 30 lbs.

Q: How does the water get in and out of the machine?

By simply filling and draining it.

Most machines come with a filling hose, though there are a few where you can pour water directly into the tub.

For draining the dirty water, there are typically two ways possible: either the machine comes with a gravity “powered” drain, so that water simply runs out; or the machine comes with some sort of pump to help you remove the water.

Q: How much laundry can I wash per load?

That entirely depends on the machine. Though there seems to be an average of roughly 8 lbs for washing. If there is a spinning option/tub this tends to hold 5 lbs of clothes.

Q: Which washing options can I get, if any?

Depending on the model, there might be anywhere between a single washing mode to multiple ones to chose from.

Generally speaking, you can get some combinations of wash, rinse, and spin. It’s not super fancy, typically, but it certainly gets the job done.
