Do you know that one corner in your house that just… smells? That one little space you have tried everything but the odour seems to come back time and time again, no matter what you throw at it?

Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. Whether it’s that slightly damp corner on the weather side or that smelly bit of basement you just don’t use anymore – we all know that dilemma.

Fortunately, there’s a whole lot of great devices to combat exactly those situations. But there is a super reliable and effective sub-section of air purifiers we strongly feel you should know about: odour combating ozone generators.

Q: How do ozone generators work?

Ozone is a form of oxygen. Unlike the very stable two-molecule structure of oxygen gas (O2), ozone is formed by three oxygen molecules witch makes it unstable. Unstable, in this case, means that ozone (O3) is quick to attach to and react with other airborne particles – and this is exactly what happens.

Because of its reactivity, ozone attaches to pollutants, bacteria, pollen, and whatever else is swirling through the room. This then disrupts and breaks down these compounds. And this basically is how ozone neutralises odours and potentially harmful pollutants.

Q: Are ozone generators better than other air purifiers?

Yes, and no.

In terms or actually neutralising unwanted odours, ozone generators are just not to beat. If it is smells you are mainly concerned with, then ozone generators are definitely your way to go!

In terms of bacteria and viruses, ozone generators are super effective as well; but they are not the only ones to be so. HEPTA filters, for example, are easily on par with ozone purifiers.

The only category where ozone generators severely lose out against other air purifiers is by actually removing larger particles. When it comes to dust, pet dandruff, and similar pollutants they simply cannot compete against actual, manual filters.

Q: Are ozone generators safe to use?

Again, the answer is yes and no.

The fact that you are asking this question shows that you are aware of the potential dangers of ozone. And who isn’t after years and years of experts telling us all about ozone layers, ozone level warnings, and potential health damage from too much exposure.

So, yes, there is a potential for ozone to be harmful.

Used correctly, ozone generators are super safe! Just read the users manual and make sure to follow everything that’s in there. (Get a first impression of what you are required to do by reading the question below.)

Q: What do I need to be mindful of when using ozone generators?

Basically, what safety instructions will come down to is this: Do not operate the ozone generator while there are people or pets in the room!

Let us be very clear on one thing: This one simple but important step makes the use of ozone generators absolutely safe!!!

It is also the reason why most devices come with a timer. Just set it to the appropriate time for the space you want to be purified and leave the room. The generator will its magical work even without you hovering.

Another thing to keep in mind is that ozone needs a bit of time to do all the reacting and turn back into safe oxygen afterwards. As a good rule of thumb, this process needs somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes. But please make sure to check your safety instructions for more accurate data.
