Ever thought of getting a heat pump installed in your home?

If so, then this is the right place for you! And if you haven’t then this is the right place to be, as well!

For those of you not really sure what a heat pump actually is, let’s have a quick look at the idea behind these devices: Heat pumps basically move air from one place to another, and act as a cost-effective alternative to standard central air systems.

So, basically what a heat pump does is acting as a heating or cooling unit depending on season. In winter, instead of creating heat with help of an electric or oil heater, a heat pump takes ambient heat from the outside (even if it’s below freezing temperatures!) and funnels it into your home. In the summer operations reverse and the pump takes warm air from inside your home and pushes it outside. And while the heat pump is distributing air from the inside out, it also dries the air out, which means in the warmer months heat pumps can act as dehumidifiers as well.

Heat pumps can be ductless (using a fan to distribute air) or ducted, can come with special air condition add-ons, and generally can offer a wide array of services depending on the type and model you chose.

To make the selection process a bit easier for you, we have gathered our top picks when it comes to the best heat pumps currently on the market for you below:

Q: How does a heat pump work?

For heating: The pumps compressor takes air from the outside, pumps it through a refrigerant, pushes it through a heat exchanger coil, and sends it to a condenser. The condenser then heats up and a fan sends the warm air out into the room.

For cooling: The process is basically reversed, taking heat from the room and sending it to the outdoors.

Q: What is SEER? What is HSPF?

Both of them are efficiency ratings.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, and is a measure of air conditioning efficiency. SEERs of 15-17 are average; in northern areas you can go as low as SEER 13, in southern areas you should have at least SEER 14.

HSPF stands for Heating Season Performance Factor and measures heating efficiency. Average HSPF ratings lie between 8 and 11.

Q: What is the benefit of having a heat pump?

Cost. It really is as easy as that.

Compared with typical furnaces, heat pumps come with a higher cost up front, but on the long run you will see about 25% to 50% savings!
